HM-04-CDF Moisture Indicator: A simple way to check whether the product was properly protected during shipping
For sensitive products, simply ensuring protection against moisture is often not enough. It is also important to verify that the protective packaging actually fulfilled its function during storage and transport.
This is precisely what the HM-04-CDF single-use moisture indicator is designed for; it allows for a simple visual check of the relative humidity inside a sealed package.
For buyers, logistics professionals, and quality control personnel, it thus offers a simple way to add an extra layer of monitoring during the transport of sensitive goods.
How does the humidity indicator work?
The HM-04-CDF indicator is placed directly inside the sealed package along with the product being protected.
It contains four indicator fields for the following values:
10% | 20% | 30% | 40% RH
If the relative humidity reaches or exceeds the corresponding value, the indicator field changes color from blue to lavender.
The result can be checked immediately—without electronic sensors, measuring devices, or other equipment.
How do you read the result?
The blue color indicates that the relative humidity is below the specified value.
A lavender color indicates that the specified humidity level has been reached or exceeded.
For example, if the 10% and 20% fields are lavender, while the 30% field remains blue, the relative humidity at the time of reading was between 20 and 30% RH.
Why should the humidity indicator be of particular interest to buyers?
When purchasing sensitive components, it is not only the price of the product and its packaging that matters. It is equally important in what condition the material arrives at the production facility.
Excessive humidity can cause, for example, corrosion of metal parts, damage to electronics, problems with sensitive components, or a shortened service life.
A humidity indicator adds a simple checkpoint to the packaging system.
When the shipment is opened, it takes only a few seconds to determine what the relative humidity level is inside the package.
This can also be useful when resolving disputes. If a damaged product arrives, the information from the indicator can help determine whether the problem might have been related to humidity inside the package.
Where can the HM-04-CDF be used?
The indicator is particularly suitable for products and components sensitive to high humidity, such as:
- electronic components and semiconductors,
- PCBs and SMD components,
- optical and measuring instruments,
- medical and laboratory equipment,
- sensitive industrial components,
- other products requiring controlled conditions during storage and transport.
The HM-04-CDF is formulated without cobalt chloride, meets the requirements of REACH, and is also intended for applications involving moisture-sensitive components in accordance with IPC/JEDEC J-STD-033.
The indicator itself does not protect the product from moisture
This is an important distinction.
A moisture indicator is neither a desiccant nor a moisture barrier. Its purpose is monitoring.
For true protection, it is advisable to create a complete packaging system:
barrier packaging + desiccant + moisture indicator
The ALU barrier foil limits the penetration of water vapor into the packaging. Desiccant pouches absorb residual moisture inside the sealed space. The HM-04-CDF indicator then allows for a visual check of the relative humidity inside the packaging.
For metal products, depending on the specific application, the system can also be supplemented with VCI corrosion protection.
A small component that can facilitate inspection of the entire shipment
In industrial packaging, details often make all the difference.
At first glance, a single-use moisture indicator seems like a minor component in the overall packaging solution. From a purchasing and quality perspective, however, it offers something very practical—quick visual information about the conditions inside the package.
No measurements. No electronics. No complicated analysis.
Do you need to design moisture protection for your products?
At Bropack Solution, we’ll help you put together a suitable protective packaging system based on the product, storage duration, shipping method, and required level of protection.
The solution can combine ALU barrier films, desiccant pouches, moisture indicators, and anti-corrosion VCI materials.
The goal is not to use as many packaging materials as possible, but to choose a combination that corresponds to the actual risk and requirements of the specific product.
